Sketch of Scientific Life

Professor You Xiao-Zeng, Inorganic chemist, was born in Jan.24, 1934 at JiAn County in Jiangxi Province.
Director of "Coordination Chemistry Institute"(1983-2001).Nanjing Univ., Ph. D. Supervisor. Director of "Inorganic
Chemistry Committee of Chinese Chemical Society" (1985). Director of Academic Committee of Chemistry and Enginneering
College, and State Key Lab of Coordination Chemistry ,Nanjing Univ.. Acadimician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He
was received his B. S. with excellent records from the Chemistry Department of Wuhan Univer- sity in 1955 and recommendated
to Nanjing University as a graduate in Chemistry. (There was no Ph.D degree system in China untill 1980.) He joined the
faculty at Nanjing University from 1957 to 1980 as asistant, lecture, associated Prof. Successively. During this period,
he took part in the School of Quantum Chemistry sponsored by State Education Commission of China in 1962- 1964. As one
of the best staff in this famous University, he went to American as visiting scholar at University of Wisconsin, Illinois
and Florida in 1980-1982, worked with Profs. R.F. Fenske, L. Dahl and R.S. Drago respectively.

He was assigned as the Director of Coordination Chemistry Institute of Nanjing University in 1983. and promoted as the
professor of chemistry in 1985. Since then, Prof. You involved himself in organized the local development and internationalexchange
activeties in the field of Inorganic Chemistry. He is also the Director of "Inorganic Committee of Chinese Chemistry Society",
Member of the "Academic Degree-Reviewing Committee of the State Concil", member of the "Evaluation Committee of theNational
  Science Award".
For fourty years, many efforts have been paid by Prof. You in the field of inorganic research and education. In his teaching
life for many years, he gives a series experimentals and courses for under graduate and graduate in the field of Inorganic Chemistry .
He wrote four book and translated four English classical textbooks on Inorganic Chemistry since 1980, which was widely used in
universities and is considered as important reference of inorganic chemistry in China. Since 1981, he has directed and trained
of 50 Ph.D and 30 M.S graduate students, and some Post Dr., many of them are very activety in the field of Inorganic Chemistry
home and abroad. In 1988, he engaged in establishing £¼The National Key Lab on Coordination Chemistry£¾, which is the unique
opening Lab. in China to accept guest research ex- perts from home and abroad. In 1985 , he engaged in founding of the £¼The Chinese
Inorganic Che -mistry£¾(China) , Sponsored by the Chinese Chemical Society , and as the editor-in chief since 1998. He hosted
£¼The National Conference on Inorganic Chemistry£¾ and £¼The National conferen -ce on Coordination Chemistry£¾ and many times
since 1983. With the cooperation of oversea and home Chinese Chemists he ingaged in sponser the £¼World-wide Inorganic Chemistry
confere- nce for Chinese Chemists£¾ (1997) and £¼Bilateral Inorganic Chemistry Symposium between China and Korea£¾(1999).
Prof. You headed the delegation of Chinese Chemical Society to attend the and paied visiting to foreign universities many times to
promote the international exchange. Especially, in 1987, as the Chief-Secretary, he organized the £¼25th International Conference
on Coordination Chemistry sponsered by IUPAC, which was considered by all participants as an extraordinary success. As the member
of organize committee, he hosted the Session of Inorganic Chemistry of£¼The 3rd Chemistry Congress of Asia£¾ and £¼34th Congress
of IUPA£¾ in 1989 and 1993 respectively. He was also invited as the international editor of £¼Comments on Inorg.Chem.£¾ by Prof. F.
Basolo(1988- ),£¼Acta Chim of Scand.£¾ by Prof. S.E. Harnung(1994- ) ,£¼J.Chem.Soc. Dalton Trans.£¾ (1989-2002) and £¼Inorganic
 Chem.commun.£¾(1998-2000).
His research interests are in inorganic chemistryand physical chemistry, especially in the foundmental research on the
		synthesis,
structure , bonding and properties of coordination compounds.
On the basis of the synthesis of novel metal complexes and by means of modern physical method and theory, his attention was
paid to the relationship between their properties and structures, as well as the molecular-based materials as following:
(1). The synthesis and crystal structures of novel coordination compound: The mixed trimeric reaction and Dmit were developed to
study the synthesis of schiff-bases and dithiolates metallic compounds; the synthesis and structure of axial adducts ,
polycyclo-complexes, multinuclear clusters and polyoxomolybdates were investigated.
(2). Studies on the structural parameters by spectroscopic method: With NMR method, the structures and equilibria of complexes
in solution were determined by chemical shift; the eqilibria , cleavage reaction and kinetics of complexes in solution by coupling
constant. With ESR methods, the electron configuration, solution structure , the parameter of Spin Harmilton of single crystals
for a series of complexes, adducts and clusters were obtained and explained. Thermodynamic and Hammett para and its relationship
with structures were established for planar adducts by spectrophotometric, cyclic voltammertry and gas-chromatographic method.
(3). The bonding and spectroscopic theory of coordination compounds: the thoretical calculation of NMR shielding constant
inclueding d and f orbitals by molecular orbital methods was established. The polarizabilities of ions was set up for all the
elements in the period table. The calculation of stark sub-lever for rare-earth complexes including intermediate coupling
and localization treatment by natural hybrid orbitals was poposed for explain the bond length and NQR coupling constants.
The corelation between the electronic structure and properties of complexes was interpreted by the calculations of quantum
chemistry. An empirical formula was proposed from the topological view point to interpret the spectra of inorganic compounds.
(4). The basic researches on the opto-electronic molecular-based materials: such as molecular conductive , non-linear optical ,
molecular magnets, solid emit materials, and optoelectronic device, are investigated in relation with the superamolecular assembly
and the process of electron and energy transfer for the material science and life science.
About 500 articles have been published by Prof. You in home and abroad with his graduates and colleagues. He has won numerable
awards as list in previous section.
